Election spending to reach RD$2 billion

Viewed 405 times.The President of the Administrative Chamber of the Central Electoral Board announced that to date RD$800 million has been spent in preparations for the elections on Sunday 16th.. However he anticipated the final figure would exceed RD$2 billion.
Roberto Rosario said that this is because election day itself sees the heaviest expenditure. He explained that the 66,250 staff at polling stations have to be paid as well as the 45,000 soldiers made available to the DICE, accounting for another RD$70 to RD$80 million
Rosario pointed out that 24 hours before the election Armed Forces and National Police come under the control of the JCE through the Chief of Electoral Military Police, General Jose Ramon Lopez, who is appointed by a decree of President Fernandez. The president of the JCE explained that only General Lopez is invested with the authority to take any decision that is linked to state security and the electoral process.
Furthermore Roberto Rosario, said that on election day no public or security official may carry firearms without first being approved by the Electoral Military Police.
He also indicated that anyone loitering near polling stations could be arrested and reminded owners of colmados and other businesses not to sell alcohol after Friday midnight.
