European Union delivers 47.5 million Euros for DR and Haiti

The Development Commissioner of the European Union, Andris Piebalgs, announced on Thursday at the National Palace the disbursement of 47.5 million Euros to develop bilateral projects in Haiti and the Dominican border.
The information was provided by Piebalgs and the director of the European Funds for Development, Domingo Jimenez, during a press conference in the Orlando Martinez Hall of the National Palace. , after a meeting with Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, Juan Themistocles Montas.
Andris Piebalgs, who will also meet with Haitian President Rene Preval, said the European Union holds the reconstruction of Haiti as a priority and that it is the largest international donor with a commitment of 1, 600 million Euros for infrastructure works.
The EU Commissioner stated that the purpose of this meeting was to discuss specific projects at the border.
He stressed that the EU has plans to provide substantial support to the Haitian government and has displayed co-operation in other areas as well as infrastructure.
He said that throughout this process, the European body has noted the good co-operation between the Dominican and Haitian governments and in our work we would implement an approach that includes the entire island. "
Present at the meeting were; the Spanish ambassador in the country, Diego Bermejo, Estefano Muucervici, Director General for Development, Irene Horejs, representative of the European Union in the Dominican Republic and Jonathan Pits, director of communications.
The Commissioner of the European Union will go to Haiti Friday to sign five financing agreements for approximately $250 million and attend the ceremony to start construction of the new City Administration buildings.
