Floods displace 31,815 people
posted on: Jul 25 2010 16:29 by Royston. Viewed 591 times.The Emergency Operations Center (COE ) has reported that the recent rains have caused severe flooding in 29 communities in the provinces of San Cristobal , Duarte and San Pedro de Macoris. 
The total number of people displaced by flooding is now 31,815 and 6,363 homes are flooded.
The agency reported that 380 victims are in official shelters while the remainder have found accommodation with friends relatives.
The worst affected area is San Cristobal with a total of 904 flooded homes. Barahona and Monte Plata are cut off by overflowing rivers and the destruction of a retaining wall.
COE reported that although the rains are to continue, the downpours will be lees intense and so the agency has downgraded the alerts in several areas.
