From the Sea to the Mountains: Thirty Kilometers of Pure Nature

If you are planning on visiting the Dominican Republic’s north coast, and are looking into visiting important tourist attractions in the region and also happen to be a lover of nature, you certainly need to consult the new Scenic Route Guide.

The guide (available at www.rutapanoramica.com) is an important new publication that will help the visitor discover a new world in the mountains that separate the country’s north coast from the center of the island.

The Scenic Route will take the visitor through 30 kilometers of “pure nature,” and lists all available services along the stretch of highway that links the north coast’s mountains to the coastline.

The route goes specifically from “La Cumbre” (The Summit), in the mountains, to the “Gran Parada,” (Grand Station) on the nearby Puerto Plata coastline.

Visitors will also receive ample information on the amber mines that are found near “La Cumbre”, or on the prosperous coffee plantations found in the mountain community of Pedro Garcia, or the extensive sugar fields of Montellano.

The guide also urges visitors to plan day-trips to the region, so that they will have plenty of time to visit some of the abovementioned sites.

All these venues have in common the spectacular views provided by the surrounding mountains, as well as the possibility of purchasing organic products, local sweets, fresh cheese and yogurt, exotic flowers and locally made furniture.

The recently published guide also promotes ziplining, hiking, spas, horseback riding and the chance to visit the monument to the Mirabal sisters, the three sisters that were killed on the orders of Dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1960.

Small and very quaint restaurants are found along the route, where traditional Dominican cuisine is served at affordable prices.

A Community Guide

The Guide was sponsored by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and the country’s Technical and Vocational Training Institute.

The Municipal Unit for Community Heritage, which involves three north coast communities, also contributed to the Guide.

This NGO sets up and co-manages and develops eco-tourism projects and cultural events that enhance the region’s sustainable development.
