Government aid for Puerto Plata flood victims
posted on: Feb 18 2010 10:30 by Royston. Viewed 452 times.The head of the Governments Social Plan, Emigdio Sosa sent 2,774,000 pesos in aid for the Puerto Plata victims of Sundays floods. The aid is in the form of food rations, mosquito nets and blankets.

The aid was distributed to 6435 families affected by the deluge, which killed a man in Los Limones.
Fernando Paulino, of the Presidents Social Cabinet represented the government at the hand over of the aid package. He added,during the presentation ceremony, that they are giving priority to emergency cases and then they will start rebuilding homes, delivering household goods and providing medical assistance.
In separate developments, the Council ratified the verbal agreement between the mayor, Walter Musa and the Minister of Tourism, Francisco Javier Garcia to use tourism ministry funds to help repair the damage caused in the tragedy.
Furthermore the council empowered mayor Walter Musa to use his discretion to bring tourism resources to bear on the problems left behind by the natural disaster as the investment required was beyond the citys budget. They also called for more assistance from central Government.
The flood caused one death last Sunday, destroyed 34 houses, partially damaged 850 houses, displaced 25,740 people and damaged the property of 335 people whose homes were flooded by water, which in some neighborhoods reached a height of nine feet.
