The Dominican government has distributed 1,947,603 cooked food rations to people affected by the earthquake that destroyed the city of Port au Prince, Haiti.

The figures were provided during the visit by Vice President Rafael Alburquerque to Port au Prince, where he said the aid represents an investment of RD $ 77,514,599 spent on providing meals from Wednesday 13 January to Sunday February 7 this year.

The mission led by the Vice President visited the Metropolitan Industrial Park (SONAPI) in  Port au Prince where 10 mobile kitchens and 92 staff are working and he was able to observe the hygiene standards and quality of the process of food distribution to the victims of the earthquake.

During this visit, Haitian President Rene Preval and his wife Elizabeth de Preval, highlighted the role of the Dominican aid provided by order of President Fernandez in supplying the nutrition needed by Haitians affected by the quake.

In Port-au-Prince, 1,705,854 rations were cooked and distributed, and in the town of Jimani 241,749, making a total of 1,947,603 rations cooked.

Nicols Caldern, who is charge of the governments aid distribution in haiti, said the costs of the food rations did not include the sum of  RD$ 3,505,685, used for the purchase and subsequent distribution of 1,947,603 liter bags of water.

He explained that on average, the government of the Dominican Republic is investing daily RD$2,981,330.

Finally the officer concluded that the Dominican government is distributing on average 74.907 cooked rations daily and as many  bags of water to the affected population.

The monitoring mission visited Haiti President Rene Preval on Saturday 6, and was led by VP Albuquerque, Nicolas Calderon, the Minister of Public Health, Bautista Rojas Gomez, Economy  Minister Themistocles Montas, former president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Enrique Iglesias and the director of Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD), Eddy Martinez.

Also participating in the meeting was Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive and the head of MINUSTAH, Edmond Mulet.
