President Leonel Fernandez ordered a wage increase of 15 percent for teachers and employees of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) from January 1, 2012, which is equivalent to 544,566,526 pesos (approx US$ 14 million) per year. He also allocated 23 million pesos to pay for overdue teaching costs.

This increase was notified by Minister of Higher Education, Ligua Amada Melo de Cardona to the President of the Association of Teachers of the UASD (Faprouasd), Ismael Peralta in response to the claim made by the Association.

Melo de Cardona presented a letter to Peralta explaining the increase and noting that it was President Fernández who had authorized it.

For their side, Ismael Peralta thanked the mediation of the Minister and said that they will continue the fight for a 60 percent wage increase and to keep the Academy going forward despite the weaknesses they have.

Peralta also clarified that they are not a political body and are not aligned with any political body.
