The death toll caused by the earthquake in Haiti now totals 212,000, according to latest government figures released by Haitian Prime Minister, Jean Max Bellerive.

"The latest figure I have received from my staff is 212,000 dead,” Bellerive said in statements made to CNN this morning from Port au Prince.

The figure could still increase somewhat, he added, referring to the final tally of dead in the tragedy, one of the largest in number of casualties reported in the Americas.

The prime minister also explained that more than 300,000 people were injured and most of them had received medical treatment.

Regarding the number of Haitians who have been left homeless, Bellerive said that figure was more than one million. Although there are close to two million living on the streets of the capital since the tragedy because of the numbers who  were already homeless before the quake on 12 January.
