The Director of Airport Safety Specialist Corps (CESA), General Pedro Rene Valenzuela Quiroz, announced the replacement of security controllers at the country's airports and the start of the use of polygraph, or lie detector tests, for these officers.
He said that those responsible for the security of airports; Gregorio Luperon in Puerto Plata, Higuera, Joaquín Balaguer, La Romana, Punta Cana, Higuey and Samana will be removed from office.
He clarified however, that Colonel Rabel Tejada Genao, responsible for security at the Las Americas airport, will remain in his post due to his experience in the management of security controls. He said that Las Americas is a complex terminal and requires a person of integrity and reliability such as Colonel Tejada Genao.
He described the changes in routine security control at the airports as being made in the interests of improving quality and efficiency.
As for the polygraph, Valenzuela Quiroz said it was not new and CESA had been applying it for several months. It is intended to establish the reliability and loyalty of the military personnel assigned to key and strategic positions within the airport security system.
"The polygraph is a test of integrity for senior officers and senior staff of CESA to clarify the intentions of the people and their loyalty to the agency in fulfilling its obligations," he said.
