Health and Education in the Dominican Republic no better than 25 years ago

While the country shows progress in some categories, particularly income, education and health of Dominican society, according to this report, are in the same situation that they were 25 years ago.
Even when there is talk that the country has moved up a few places on the scale of the Human Development Index (HDI), progress is made at a rate slower than the average country in the world.
The document states that the Dominican Republic's HDI has improved over the past 40 years, but stipulated that that progress has slowed compared to other countries. This is reflected in the country's position being similar to what it was 20 years ago.
When viewed over the long term, the health and education situation is slightly better, as during the mid-eighties to late nineties the country progressed faster than the rest of the world. The UNDP study indicates that since the late nineties, progress has been slower when making the comparison with the rest of the countries studied.
"In 2010 the Dominican Republic's world position in education and health is equal to what it was 25 years ago," says the report and confirms what other studies have established that the country is far below the average for Latin America and the Caribbean in these aspects.
An interesting aspect of the diagnosis of this year is that compared to the rest of the world, the country has a higher percentage of women who have completed secondary education compared to men. However this average, in both cases is below the average for the region and the world median.
