Heavy rain and blackouts
posted on: Jul 8 2011 10:25 by The Reporter. Viewed 604 times. We may not have seen much rain here on the North Coast recently (as of June 7), but many other parts of the country have been deluged with torrential rain.

One man died when a house collapsed on him, and an estimated 5300 people have been displaced by the heavy rains.
At least 2300 homes have been affected, including 500 houses actually under water in East Barquita, due to the rise in the level of the Ozama River.
The bulk of those affected were in the Santo Domingo region in the south of the country.
The rain also caused widespread electricity blackouts.
Both Ede-Sur and Ede-Este issued press statements to say they were forced to double their repair teams to deal with the downed power lines that interrupted service on more than 40 circuits. Ede-Sur reported significant blackouts in more than 20 of its circuits, with more than 355 reported interruptions. At the same time Ede-Este said that they had work brigades fixing 21 circuits. The National District, Monte Plata, La Altagracia, Boca Chica, San Pedro de Macoris, La Romana, Hato Mayor, Higuey and El Seibo were worst affected. However, in the Cibao, Ede-Norte said that their systems were working normally and that no unscheduled blackouts were reported.
