Hospital operates 89 children from the heart

A total of 89 children with heart disease have been operated on in the programme of paediatric Cardiovascular Surgery in the hospital Infantil Robert Reid Cabral, Center where each year receive 150 children needing to be operated from the heart.

Performed surgeries, seven have been heart open and closed 82 to mostly correct problems of patent ductus arteriosus outside the heart. Operated patients have ages of two months of birth until the 17 years.

The programme started nearly a year ago and so far allows four to five weekly surgeries and for the next year they cover between one and two open heart a month for the disposal to the high demand.

It is estimated that for every thousand births that occur in the country, between six and eight have pathology heart.

The details of the results of the cardiovascular surgery program were offered yesterday by the director of the u000aHospital, Emilio Mena Castro, and Maritza Lopez Mateo, responsible for the service of cardiology at the Centre.

Explained that to make such interventions and diagnostic procedures, the hospital has latest equipment and a modern surgical unit installed with the support of the Ministry of public health and the Office of first lady. The service has a modern unit of catheterization and a new team of Echocardiogram.

"This is a novedosísimo program that the hospital had argued many years ago, and is being consolidated as one of the most important programmes in the country in cardiovascular surgery in Pediatrics", said the director of the Robert Reid.
