In the beachfront tourist community of Bayahibe, on the country’s eastern region, visitors now have the option of designing their own jewelry with their favorite materials.
This option is made possible thanks to the Association of Women Artisans, situated in the rural community of “Villa Padre Nuestro” in Bayahibe.
The Association recently opened the “Arte Cuseco” arts and crafts center, situated some 15 minutes from the tourist center of Bayahibe.
“Arte Cuseco” runs a jewelry workshop, where anyone interested can participate and create their own jewelry by using local materials (cow’s horns; seeds and coconut shells).
The center also operates a daycare center (for the women who work in the shop); training rooms; a kitchen; bathrooms; a pro-environment filter and a water well.
The center is co-sponsored by the Hotel Association of La Romana-Bayahibe, the country’s Ministry of Tourism, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the organization DESTINOS (“Fondos para el Desarrollo Eco-Turístico con Inversion Orientada a la Sostenibilidad”).
Design Your Very Own Jewelry
In the arts and craft center, visitors can design and choose the materials they want to create their very own jewelry. The center’s slogan is: “Design your own jewelry!”
