In the 'Year of Transparency', Dominican Government must show signs of fighting against corruption

The presidential candidate for the PRD (Partido Revolucionario Dominicano), Miguel Vargas, says that the Government, after declaring 2011 as Year of Transparency, should begin to show signs of fighting corruption, and show discipline in public spending.
He said that the government of President Leonel Fernandez (PLD) was characterized by waste, corruption and unnecessary investment in projects that do not solve the main problems of the country.
Vargas said that the PRD will continue to denounce corruption and assume its rightful role as the main opposition party.
In response to the motion made by the pastor Ezequiel Molina, to abolish the National Congress and use those resources for education, Vargas said that the legislature is part of the democratic system and must be preserved.
He said what is needed in Congress is to make the necessary corrections so that they understand what their role is and act like the Chamber of Auditors, which in his opinion rather than appointing an executive body to oversea, appointed a pro-government agency.
"We understand that Congress is part of the democratic system, we must strengthen and correct actions, but never sever one of the most important powers," he said.
Vargas was speaking after inaugurating the national campaign command located on Maximo Gomez Avenue near the corner of John F. Kennedy (Santo Dimingo) where he also received New Year greetings from the leaders supporting the project.
