The New York Philharmonic played the last movement of Mahler's Ninth Symphony on Tuesday night at the Avery Fisher at Lincoln Center New York City Hall. Director Alan Gilbert had to stop the concert until the phone left ringing.
The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/xvTkcr) reported that hearing the tone "Marimba" characteristic of an iPhone, Gilbert turned his head with annoyance, but the phone in the front row was still ringing and the minutes passed.
Gilbert requested that you turned off the phone and finally halted the Orchestra until the sound ceased.
The Philharmonic said it was the first time that the director interrupted an execution due to a cell phone or other noise annoying.
