Latest technology coming to Barrick Gold Mines

Four giant autoclaves are to be imported from Malaysia. They work like huge pressure cookers using pure oxygen to enable extraction of the precious metal with minimal environmental impact.
The units will arrive at the Arroyo Brarril port in Samana and will go by road on special vehicles with 44 axles and 528 tires.
The company has also announced that it is to make a US$40 million investment in the road system between the port and the mine. This will involve strengthening 27 bridges and building three new ones. The work will apparently employ 600 local men.
Fernando Albavera, the executive director said, "Today we can ensure that mining is moving towards the right direction of sustainable development. The autoclaves represent the most advanced extraction technology in the world and the best way to extract gold with minimal environmental impact."
Barrick Gold provides an investment of over US$3,000 million in the Dominican Republic and employs 6,500 people. The company has had a contract here for 25 years but continually faces objections and protests from environmental campaigners and politicians opposed to the terms of their contract.
