Leonel Antonio Fernández Fernández Reyna born December 26, 1953 in Villa Juana, a sector of Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic, but his family moved to the United States where he spent his childhood and his formative years in Washington Heights, New York.

In 1973 he joined the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), when Professor Juan Bosch left the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) to create the new party.

Fernández was a pupil of Bosch, and stood as a candidate for the Vice-Presidency next to it during the presidential elections of 1994.

Is currently the President of the Republic since 2004 and President of the Party of Dominican Liberation (LDP). In 1996 he became the first head of State out of the ranks of the LDP oficialistsa u000aunder the so-called "Patriotic Front" which defeated the PRD ticket, headed by José Francisco Peña Gómez.
