Airport officials reported that the incident occurred at 9:15 pm and caused considerable damage to the lighting system of the American Eagle plane which was ready at the gate to leave for Puerto Rico.
Jos Francisco Daz , an employee of the airport services company BSA, was under the aircraft when the lightning struck and he lost consciousness due to his injuries.
The employee was taken by fellow workers and members of the Airport Security Specialist Corps (CESA), to the airport medical clinic where he received first aid. He was then transferred in an Aerodom ambulance to a private medical center in Santo Domingo,.
The runway lights took an hour to fix, but caused no delays to flights. The aircraft remains under repair at the airport. The passengers who had intended to fly to Puerto Rico were taken on another flight.
