e the construction of a new cruise terminal for Puerto Plata.Martinez also stressed his belief that the terminal should be built in Maimon bay. Because of the heavy industrial nature of the port at Puerto Plata, he feels it is the wrong image to present to tourists as they arrive.
He added: that he thought it would be more expensive to build a tourist project in the in the industrial port than at a new facility in Maimon which is only 10 minutes from the center of Puerto Plata.
The head of the American Chamber of Commerce agreed, saying that construction would be less disruptive if carried out at Maimon.
Martinez also addressed the objections made by owners of gift shops and restaurants in Puerto Plata, to the cruise terminal being built at Maimon, suggesting that deals could be struck with tour guides and drivers to ensure that local business did not lose out.
He explained his wish that the government and tourist agencies should take control of the transport business at the new cruise terminal to ensure tourists are taken to genuine places of interest and allowed to choose what to see and how to spend their money at local businesses.
