LPG stations without scales to be fined

The director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Proconsumidor), Altagracia Paulino, reported that a large number of the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling stations have not complied with the latest dictate ordering that they should have weight measuring scales (balances) so that customers can weigh the cylinders before and after buying the fuel.
Paulino, speaking to reporters, said they will proceed with issuing fines to stations that have so far defied the measure to incorporate the scales.
"This inspection aims to ensure transparency in the selling of LPG, so that users who require it can weigh their cylinders before and after they buy the product," he said.
Proconsumidor began yesterday inspecting LPG bottling plants in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Moca and to verify the installation of scales at all stations in the country.
The official also said that LPG station owners cannot make the excuse that there are no scales available for sale in the country, because Proconsumidor made checks in the Dominican market and found that the scales are widely available in the Dominican Republic.
"There are scales on the market that previously had no dial, and when we checked scales are available, and for a pittance," he said.
Paulino said yesterday received a letter from Raysa Rodriguez, representing the owners of gas stations, requesting a further period of 60 days to acquire the scales, but said it is not an appropriate time to accommodate this request because it was received just 10 days prior to the deadline.
Paulino reported that Proconsumidor is defending the economic rights of about 2.2 million households who use LPG and about 134 000 vehicle owners in the country who also operate with this fuel, based on the Law 358-05.
On August 30, 2010, Proconsumidor ordered all Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) selling stations to acquire scales and weigh cylinders within 60 days.
