Meeting to discuss Caribbean electricity network

The governor of Puerto Rico, Luis Fortuno, and President Leonel Fernandez will meet on 13th of this month in Santo Domingo to discuss the creation of the Caribbean Energy Network, which would improve the Dominican electric service, said Puerto Rico's Secretary of  State, Kenneth McClintock.

The proposal to be discussed is the creation of a cable connection between the West of Puerto Rico and the East of the Dominican Republic. If this proposal was to become a reality it would not only improve the quality of the service in DR, but it is claimed it would reduce the cost of the service as well.

McClintock said that the hope was eventually to create a network, or electrical grid, connecting several Caribbean islands. This would allow surplus energy to be transferred to those countries in need and reduce costs to consumers.

He explained that the first stage would be connecting Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic.
