The crisis in school milk quality grew again with new cases of food poisoning in Nagua and La Vega. This brings to 74 the number of pupils made ill by drinking their breakfast milk at school. 16 new cases were reported in Nagua and 8 in La Vega.

Immediately, the Education Minister Melanio Paredes, warned he would take drastic measures to put an end to cases of food poisoning in children at school. He said he had called an emergency meeting with suppliers at 2:00pm today.

The meeting will take place the Office of International Cooperation (OIC) with company representatives of Dominican Dairys (Ladom), Rica, Parmalat, Cepi Cibao and Maria Pasteurisers.

Paredes ordered the replacement of Ladoms chocolate milk with juice pending analysis of the product. He said that, as a precautionary measure, the Ministry of Education decided to substitute the school breakfast milk with juice in 354 public schools, with 60 thousand students, to allow time to investigate the situation.

He also clarified that the milk products in question have a shelf life until the 28th of August this year.

Other recent cases since February 2nd have been 2 girls in Piky Lora school in Santo Domingo, 40 children in Maimon, two children in Pablo Barinas school, San Cristobal, 11 children in Apolinar Perdomo school in Tamayo.
