More than 15 aftershocks after the Dominican 5.3 earthquake
posted on: Jan 5 2012 10:58 by The Reporter. Viewed 334 times.After the earthquake of 5.3 degrees that struck the country early this morning there have been more than 15 minor tremors of a lesser magnitude, according to the Director of the seismology Institute of the UASD, Eugenio Polanco.
Polanco said that the biggest of the aftershocks was 3.3 and occurred at the 9:25 a.m. this morning.
He pointed out that the earthquake that struck the country today was the largest ever recorded after the one of 8.1 which occurred in the year 1946.
He said that faults are very active in Bahía de Ocoa where the epicenter was registered and that on several occasions there has been a recurrence.
He described the quake as superficial due to its depth of 18 kilometers. Quakes at depths of zero to 70km are generally classed in this way.
