Last week, the Office for Reorganization of Transportation (Opret) published in a paid-for space, details of the costs of the work so far, until 30 September this year, and which emphasizes investment in station #7 (Luperon Avenue), which in itself is RD$ 469,410,968.36, which, according to the report, has added significant costs to the overall spend.
The work for the second metro line has been delayed at stations located from Winston Churchill Avenue to Luperon Avenue, because the ground is mainly comprised of clay, which has been impacted heavily by the rains in previous weeks due to the hurricane season. In these stations, special construction techniques have been needed, including the installation of piles to reinforce the structures.
However, work has been progressing well in the stations of Avenues Lope de Vega, Gomez, and Ortega y Gasset, where installations include pedestrian escalators.
“These stations are at a very advanced stage to the extent that some of the staff have been discontinued earlier this month. At these stations we 4 engineers, and that number has been halved since the civil engineering work is almost complete,“ said an engineer who asked not to be identified.
In fact, the costs for escalators and elevators according to Opret’s expenditure report, amount to RD$ 411,382,304.86.
As for the physical rail tracks, one of the engineers involved indicated that these were installed on the north side from the station on Avenida Maximo Gomez with John F. Kennedy until the station on Winston Churchill, leaving the south side available for the movement of vehicles transporting construction materials.
Two engineers working on the construction of the work told journalists that the stations from the Francisco del Rosario Sánchez bridge up to the John F. Kennedy and Máximo Gómez station are at a less advanced stage than those toward station #7 in Luperon Avenue.
In fact, the penultimate of the stations to be built in this phase, #19 located in Calle Julio de Peña Valdez, has been built with much lower costs, just RD$ 49,807,868.57. None of the other stations have been built for such a low amount, with most costing more than RD$ 100,000,000 to build.
The construction of the line for transporting passengers East-West towards the city of Santo Domingo has cost RD$ 43,089,362.50 in consultancy costs from the Madrid Metro in Spain.
