The tourism growth is attributed to campaigns promoting the country as a tourist destination, made by the private sector and the Ministry of Tourism, a strategy that minister Francisco Javier Garcia considered key to increasing the 4.1 million tourists who visited the Dominican Republic in 2010.

In the month of September, tourist arrivals were 239,706 visitors, a growth of 9.31%, representing 20,414 additional tourists, which is explained by the arrival of non-resident foriegners who contributed, in absolute terms, 19,658 visitors, amounting to a 10.90% increase from the previous month.
While the number of the residents who made trips abroad rose 1.51%, 5.214 additional passengers in January-September 2011, the report released by the Central Bank highlights.

According to the report, tourist arrivals by country shows that in South America sent 84,901 additional visitors, growing 42.55%, due to the contributions from Brazil, 29,429, Argentina, with 25,759, Chile with 8,411, Colombia with 5,781 and Peru with 5,463.
He notes that since 2009 the number of tourists from South America has doubled, from 143,473 in January-September 2009, to 284,412 passengers in the same period of 2011, representing 140,939 additional tourists and an increase in the activity of the region, from 5.40% in 2009 to 10.01% in 2011.
While North America, however, brought additional visitors 47,822, 40,345 of which belong to the United States, the country with the most growth, and the European market fell by 14,813 tourists, despite the investment made by the country in promoting to attract more tourists from the continent.
The Dominican Republic received 4,100,000 tourists in 2010 and public authorities projections are to exceed these figures, as it has stepped up promotional efforts in emerging markets, as well as diversification of tourism offerings in sports, cultural and religious as an alternative to sun and beach tourism.
