More Tourists Visit Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana, situated on the Dominican Republic’s easternmost region, received 2.2 million visitors in 2011 through its international airport, a solid 11% jump from the previous year. To date, Punta Cana is still the preferred location in the Caribbean for Canadian, American and European tourists.
In December, 218,000 international travelers visited the region: 54% from Canada and the United States; 35% from Europe; and 11% from Latin America.
Local experts indicate that the number of European tourists traveling to the region jumped by 10% during December of 2011, while the number of Americans increased by 15% and Latin Americans by a healthy 22%.
The number of Colombians, Venezuelans and Panamanians traveling to Punta Cana jumped significantly during the last month of 2011.
In all, Punta Cana’s international airport handled 2.2 million visitors during 2011, some 223,000 more than the numbers registered in 2010.
In December alone Punta Cana received more than 117,000 visitors from North America, more than 76,000 from Europe and 24,000 more from Latin America.
