Motorized watersports banned for Easter (Semana Santa)

The prohibition is set forth in resolution 36-2010, signed by Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia, and forbids the use of vehicles such as jet skis, wave runners and motorboats, as well as motorbikes and horse riding on the beach to prevent accidents. The ban will be in force from April 1st to 4th.
The Minister has instructed the Tourism Police (Politur) to enforce the measure and sought the co-operation of the Armed Forces, National Police, the Public Ministry, Civil Defense and the State Attorney.
The Tourism Minister explained that the measure is needed because during the holiday the beaches and resorts have a much higher number of tourists, so the authorities have a responsibility to take protective measures.
He stressed that the free use of beach areas for visitors should be conducted under the rule of law, morality, decency and respect for private property.
He said, however, that the resolution will not affect water transport in Gri Gri Lagoon, Isla Saona, Catalina Island and Cayo Levantado.
