Mototaxis warn of more action against 'unfair' fines
posted on: Jul 4 2010 15:56 by Royston. Viewed 656 times. The Federation of Puerto Plata Mototaxis has criticized the government of President Leonel Fernandez for the "political and capricious" application of traffic laws.
The organization said that during the last election campaign there were no attempts to apply these laws to motoconchos but now the excessive fines applied to mototaxi drivers demonstrate the hatred of the authorities for it's members. They complain that the maximum fine of RD$1,500 is always applied and never the minimum, adding that this is despite the financial contribution made on every gallon of fuel purchased for the bikes.
The Federation made the remarks as it announced the start of a campaign on the streets of Puerto Plata against what it considers harassment of mototaxi drivers. In a statement released to the press they say "we have no other way than fighting, as it is our only source of employment with the high unemployment in our country."
The organization conducted a march through the city last Thursday to deliver a document to Senator Francis Vargas and another to AMET, at Avenida Presidente Caamao.
