Mystery surrounds multiple poisonings at Barrick Gold site in Cotui

According to Dr. Jose Miguel Jimenez Pena more than a thousand people were poisoned after a boiler exploded at the mining companys premises.
The physician explained that those affected are being taken to hospitals in San Francisco de Macoris, La Vega and Bonao. Adding that the hospitals had been overwhelmed by the numbers of injured.
He said Cotui health authorities had requested the help of the Public Health Department to send equipment and personnel to respond to the situation.
Public Health must act urgently in Cotu because there may be people who will die if not treated properly," Pena said in a telephone interview on the 'Government of Morning' radio program.
However, other reports from Emergency Operations Center (COE) allege that only about 350 people had been affected by an outbreak of food poisoning after eating in the company dining room.
Edwin Olivares, deputy director of Operations of the EOC, said although it was initially reported that the incident was the explosion of a boiler, in reality it is a problem related to food poisoning.
Dr. Jose Miguel Jimenez Pena reported that the number of intoxicated is more than a thousand and that Cotui health authorities have asked the help of the Ministry of Public Health to send equipment and medical personnel to respond to the situation.
The company has said it will issue a press release around noon today.
