The Dominican Corporation of State Electrical Companies (CDEEE) has announced the new heads of the distribution companies.

Celso Marranzini, CDEEE executive vice president, presented the three men at a press conference. Marcelo Silva, Francisco Leiva and Eduardo Saavedra have been appointed by executive decree and the press statement says the men have been given a mission to reduce losses, to make more efficient spending, improve service quality and increase income to reduce the subsidy to reasonable levels and eventually to remove it altogether.

Marranzini said that improvements to the distribution companies were urgently needed and of a high priority. He said that from now on "best practice" would be employed in the management of these businesses.

He also said that the electricity industry in Dominican Republic ranks among the worst in the index of quality of electricity service in the world. He said that the only countries who scored worse were  Timor, Bangladesh, Angola, Lebanon, Chad, Nigeria and Nepal, according to the Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011,  from the World Economic Forum.

The press release offered some information on the backgrounds of the new managers.

Marcelo Silva, Edesur, is a commercial engineer with experience in carrying out managerial responsibilities in national and international enterprises in the area of electricity. He is an analyst with Sistemas de Informacin and has extensive experience in crisis management and coordination of agreements at political and institutional levels.

Eduardo Saavedra, Edenorte, is an electrical engineer with over 36 years of experience in executive positions in commercial, technical and administration of distribution utilities. He has extensive experience in strategic planning.

Francisco Leiva, EdeEste, has 23 years of experience working in top level executive positions in several Chilean and Latin American utilities. From 2005 to 2007 he was an advisor to CDEEE and was the creator of  the 24 hour supply plans "Ciudades 24 horas de luz" and "Circuitos 24 horas de luz" which EdeEste implemented in Hato Mayor and El Seibo
