New phone code 849 will take effect from Monday 15th

Starting Monday 15th of this month a new phone code goes into effect in the country, adding to the 809 and 829 codes.
The 849 prefix, was announced by President of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), Jos Rafael Vargas.
The new code was issued by the North American authorities because of the growth in telephone numbers since the last code, 829 was issued in 2005.
Since then the country has grown in telephone ownership, especially mobile, to the point that today 97% of the percentage of population has a phone.
"There is an issue of inefficiency or excessive growth, but the continuing upward trend means that we need that extra code," said Joelle Exarhakos, executive director of Indotel.
