New traffic laws to revoke driving licenses and introduce penalty points
posted on: Apr 26 2010 13:45 by Royston. Viewed 838 times. The Dominican Republic is to adopt new penalties for infringements of traffic laws, including a points system and suspension of driving licenses.
Permanent removal and temporary suspension of driver's license, as well as sentences from one year to the maximum, will be applied to drivers guilty of causing fatal accidents. Fines will be imposed on public transport drivers exceeding the prescribed number of passengers.
All of these measures are being contemplated in the Traffic and Land Transportation Code being submitted to Congress.
The initiative is designed to eventually eliminate the chaos on the streets of the country, or so it is hoped by the authors of the proposal, including; Marcos Villamn, Ignacio Ditrn and Nelson Peguero Paredes, directors of Conare, Omsa and Amet, also, Ramn Gmez, sub director of OTTT, and Milcades Prez Polanco, chairman of the Board of Directors of Fondet. They said that the Code proposes to establish a Board and an Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation.
The Code would create sector policies, and the Institute of Traffic and Transport would be the executor of policies, plans and programs.
"This legislation would mean an important step in solving a complex problem essential for the proper development of the daily life of society," said Villamn.
The driver's license would be canceled or suspended when the driver has accumulated the maximum of 20 points allowed, if it has been obtained fraudulently, or for being caught drunk or under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs as determined by the Police or a member of the National Institute of Traffic and Land Transportation. Suspension would also be automatic for a repeat offense of the same traffic law.
