The false notes of most concern to small businesses and indivicuals who are most likely to be affected.
The Eastern Dominican Republic was the first region to identify the counterfeits where betting bank owners, colmados (local food shops), gas stations, discos, pharmacies and public transport vehicles have already been ripped off.
One of the differences between the fake and real 50 peso notes is that the number "50" on the left side of the back is in a larger circle on the fake note, while the original is in a semicircle.
However, the most striking difference is in the iridescent optical band located on the back of the banknotes that shows up as a golden color when you the note is flat and tends to disappear when changing position. In this band you can read the initials "BC / DR" on the original but not on the fake.
Original notes also have raised parts on the lower left hand side which allows the blind to check the authenticity, wheras the false notes do not.
