This was announced by Leonardo Mella, president of Communications in Conatra who also runs Aerotaxi. Mella, said that the cabs have an individual cost of $18,000, but thanks to the facilities granted by the Government, each taxi driver will have to pay only $10,000, not counting finance interest and the GPS equipment. This has not been confirmed by any government spokesman however.
The facilities consist of a government discount for the first tax or placa reduced from RD$80,000 to RD$23,000, and relief of 60% of the cost of customs duties and port usage costs, said Mella.
CONATRA announced it would import 3.000 yellow cabs, of which have 500 arrived at the weekend.
Mella also said National District City Council had agreed to finance the cost of re-painting for those taxi drivers not receiving Conatra vehicles. The estimate for this work is RD$100million.
The city also promised an advertising campaign to encourage people to only use the authorized yellow taxis.
