Nurses strike on Monday

Members of the Co-ordination of Nurses Guilds announced a work stoppage for eight hours on Monday in Public hospitals of the National District in support of their demands for wage rises.

The strike is scheduled to begin at 7:00 am and conclude at 3:00 pm to demand higher wages and to demand that nurses be included in negotiations with the government commission investigating a salary increase for the health sector.

The unions that convened the work stoppage are the National Union of Dominican Nursing Services (UNASED), the National Union of Nursing Services (UNASE) and the Association of Nursing of the Dominican Institute of Social Security.

They are demanding a wage increase of one hundred percent, the appointment of 1,500 nurses, the payment of one hundred percent of pensions, seniority pay incentives, risk and travel allowances, inclusion in government housing plans and the completion of help centers under construction.

Minerva Magdaleno, speaking on behalf of the Guilds, said that after waiting for months for a response to their claims from the government, they have no resource other than to cripple the hospitals, to enforce their rights to better living conditions.

She said her call to strike has garnered the support of a large proportion of the population because nurses can not live on a salary of 9,000 pesos per month, a figure which is less than half the cost of the average food basket of over 20 thousand pesos.

She said that neither the Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, the head of the Commission, or the Public Health Minister, Bautista Rojas Gomez, have paid attention to the claims of these workers.

She said the Government should know that this abuse has far exceeded acceptable limits, a situation that forced them to return to the path of conflict.
