Oil discovered in La Altagracia

The Directorate of Mines has reported the discovery of oil in the East of the country. Samples have been sent to the laboratories of GH Geochemical Services Ltd, in England.

The Director General of Mining, Octavio Jos Lpez Taveras, said through a press release that the oil was found in Higuey, La Altagracia province and was initially tested by engineers Melanio Aquino and Luis Torres, deputy director and director, respectively, of hydrocarbons in the Ministry of Mining, in response to a call from the mayor of Higuey, Jose Amable Cordonez .

He explained that local farmers had reported strong odors and oil seeping from the ground.
The official said the samples were sent to laboratories at GH Geochemical Services, in Bebington, England, and the results determined that it is "a natural unrefined oil", very different to the oil already found at Azua. It is apparently of  "better quality (less sulfur) and confirms the existence of at least two active Oil Systems on the island of Hispaniola, in two geographically separate terrains, one in the southwest and one in the east of the island."

Tavares said the discovery increases the importance of the East for oil exploration, probably to the same level or higher than the Azua area.
Additionally, he said, it could be assumed that rock strata containing the oil could be the same as the source of the natural gas discovered last year in San Pedro by the group of scientists from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, led by Dr Andrs Carvo.

He clarified that, after this preliminary report. the Directorate General of Mines continues to do field work and laboratory tests to determine the different possible sources of oil in the Dominican Republic. He said among the Ministry's immediate objectives is to use this new data to make a reinterpretation of existing information and make arrangements to issue tenders next year for oil exploration in the Dominican Republic.
