Of all motor vehicles, 48.7% percent are motorcycles, followed by private cars at 25.1%. 12% are commercial vehicles and the remainder is distributed among jeeps, buses, heavy machines, and others. In 2009 there were 125,653 new vehicles, while in 2008 the figure was 205,197.
Of the 1,252,713 motorcycles, only 1.3% were first registered in 2009. The period 2001-2009 accounts for 39% and the remaining 59.7 percent are older than 2001.
The data is contained in the Annual Statistical Bulletin for vehicles, edited by DGII and can be found in the statistics section at www.dgii.gov.do.
It presents the different types of vehicles registered by origin, brand, color, year of manufacture, and preferences of taxpayers for style and colors that dominated the market for the period January to December 2009.
The decline in growth rate of vehicles could be explained by the effect of the global financial crisis and its effect on the automotive industry, and the restrictive monetary policy implemented in 2008 by the monetary authorities to counter inflationary pressures from oil.
