PAHO calls to eradicate cholera

The Pan American Health Organization convened yesterday Wednesday to the international community and the Governments of Haiti and Dominican Republic to eradicate completely from the island of Hispaniola cholera, the epidemic has become one of the most important in history with 7,000 deaths in Haiti.

"Cholera in Hispaniola means anger in the rest of the Caribbean, because there are daily movement of people and there is always risk to other countries members of Caricom that depend on tourism, said Director Mirta Roses organization.

She was inclined to consider 2021 as goal of eradication on the island of Hispaniola, comprised of Haiti and Dominican Republic, but he said he hoped to have a detailed plan of action for June, when the UN held in Rio of Janeiro Rio 20, its Conference on development sustainable.

Roses said at press conference that the second anniversary of the earthquake u000ahe shook Haiti is an ideal opportunity to launch this call to eradicate cholera in the island, as the rest of the continent did a decade after the epidemic unleashed in Peru in 1991 that left 10,000 deaths and more than 1,000,000 cases.

The Inter-American Bank of development (IDB) and the Haitian Government estimates that the necessary investment in infrastructure for water supply and sanitation in Haiti ranges from 746 to 1,100 million dollars, 60% of which should come from funds pledged but not yet disbursed to the Fund of us $ 11,000 million reconstruction, explained the official.

In addition to fundraising, the eradication of cholera strategy should include establishing as a priority the improvement of the water supply and sanitation infrastructure, create a group of international experts and the formulation of a strategy between Port-au-Prince and Saint u000aSunday.
