People aged between 15 and 49 years old suffer more accidents

70% Of the accidents in the country are persons between 15 and 49 years of age, according to a study entitled "Trauma and injury road traffic in Dominican Republic 2010", which also records that the greater frequency of accidents correspond to motorcyclists.

Research also concerns the existence of limitations on the quality of registers and ensures that the national police duplicate records exceed 45 per cent and according to data from the Social Security and forensic medicine, resulting in 374 deaths that were reported incorrectly.

The study was conducted by Dr. Adrian Puello, as his thesis for the master in public health and epidemiology. It was possible under cooperation agreements between the universities autonomous of Santo Domingo (UASD) and the Segalen Bordeaux of Bordeaux, France, together with the National Council of Social Security (CNSS).

According to the study, it is estimated that u000aabout 33,114 traffic accidents occurred in the year 2010, but the current system only recorded 11,908 cases only in the year, so the estimated underregistration rises to 64% of the total

To present research, in a ceremony that took place at the UASD, Puello said that injuries and deaths from traffic accidents constitute a real public health problem in the country and that there are major disadvantages in official statistics thereon.
