The capture last week of the Spanish drug-dealer, Arturo del Tiempo Marquez, has taken a new twist, with his infamous Torre Atiemar (Atiemar Tower) building in Santo Domingo seized by Dominican authorities
Photographs have been published on the internet of President Leonel Fernndez attending the ceremony marking start of construction of the Atiemar Tower.
This is the piece of prime real estate in Santo Domingo which has been seized by the authorities investigating the financial affairs of Spanish businessman Arturo del Tiempo Mrquez after his imprisonment in Spain for involvement in a 1.2 tonne consignment of cocaine sent from the Dominican Republic.
The photographs show the President and other officials all smiling happily with Marquez.
It has been suggested that the publication is the work of Fernandez political opponents seeking to bring him into disrepute in the run up to the elections on May 16.
There are allegations that funding for the multi-million dollar project was initially rejected by private banks due to the background of Marquez, but supported 100% by the state controlled Banco de Reservas.
Further allegations suggest some officials involved in the funding later became owners of apartments in the tower.
