Dock workers decided to confront customs authorities because they say that recent measures taken by the authorities have damaged their livelihoods.
Union leader, Pablo Castillo says that containers arrriving at the port in cargo ships are now taken directly to Santiago to be checked, bypassing the Puerto Plata office, which is displacing workers from their place of employment.
He said that the port is now only working 2 days, instead of the previous Monday through Saturday, which is detrimental to the dockers.
Castillo organized the protest to demand the government run a review of the provisions of Resolution 226-06 (July 21, 2006) on the privileges that are granted to companies that bring cargo through the Puerto Plata Maritime terminal.
Moreover, Castillo has sued the Ministry of Finance demanding that they pay RD $16,000 that the Government still owes to former dock workers in Puerto Plata, on account of employee benefits as mandated by the 199-02 Act respecting compensation to these former public servants.
