A private plane owned by the hotel group, Grupo Punta Cana was stolen early yesterday morning from the company's hangar at the International Airport Dr. Joaquin Balaguer (La Isabela). La Isabela Airport is located north of the city of Santo Domingo in the community of El Higüero.

The plane was a Cessna King Air 200, registered as N871 in the United States, valued at around US$2.5 million, according to a press release issued by the company yesterday. A company spokesman said he did not have details on the circumstances of the case and the case is handled by the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESA).

It was reported that interstate agencies that deal with airport security are investigating the circumstances under which the aircraft was stolen. The authorities found a transport truck and several empty gas tanks at the entrance of the hangar, and assume that the thieves were able to refuel the airplane.

In addition to CESA, the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC) is leading the case.

Alejandro Herrera, director of IDAC, yesterday visited the airport where he explained that all state security agencies met to investigate the situation.

"I can't give out any details, we will be doing research and any detail can alter this investigation. I am going to ask you to be patient, and that in due time we will give all the details of what happened," he said. In addition to the Airports Department investigating the case, the Dominican Air Force and Police Science Department will also be assisting.

CESA director, General Zenón Padilla promised to establish the causes of theft. Inside help has not been ruled out.

According to preliminary information, the Cessna King Air 200 registration N871 (United States), left the  Punta Cana Group's hangar at International Airport Dr. Joaquin Balaguer at three in the morning unathorized, and was detected by a control tower at the Las Americas International Airport (AILA) to be heading to a country in South America. A company spokesman said he did not have details on the circumstances of the theft.
