Police Chief insists all vehicle checkpoints will be in well lit areas

Viewed 401 times.National Police Chief, Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gmez, issued instructions on Wednesday to all regional directors and commanders that any routine checks and vehicle inspections should only be carried out under central coordination and in well lit areas. 
He also made it clear that police officers setting up unauthorized checkpoints would be punished severely. "No one under our control may set up a checkpoint or review without the approval of the regional directors and previously coordinated under a protocol," said the police chief..
He further warned that during checks which have been approved, officers must exercise caution in the use of force.
In interviews to present his plans for his tenure of office, Major General Polanco Gomez acknowledged the role played by the media to keep people informed and in combating internal corruption. He guaranteed to always be available to satisfy any concerns of journalists.
He said he would be working to allow Dominican society to continue to live in a climate of peace and tranquility under the protection of a professional law enforcement body respectful of human rights.
But he also made clear his intention to pursue all criminals and increase preventive patrolling of shopping areas and residential streets to protect lives and property.
