Police don’t kill me, I’ll stop!

"Police don’t kill me, I’ll stop," is a new Dominican slogan circulating around the internet on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The slogan in Spanish, “¡Policía no me mate, yo me paro!” is designed to draw attention to the recent deaths of Dominicans who have been shot in their vehicles by police, after they have refused a police order to stop.

In the last month, in two separate incidents, people were shot and killed by police after they refused to stop in an unlit area. In both cases, others in the vehicles stated they intended to stop, but only in a well-lit area. This, many are saying, is a direct result of citizens being afraid of stopping in dark areas, and their overall distrust in the police.

The slogan has created a storm of awareness, being seen in emails, on cellphones, and there are reports of T-shirts and other promotional material being produced.

"Police don’t kill me, I’ll stop," has become the talk of youth, universities, radio programs, public transport stops, workplaces, and anywhere where there are several people.
