Fermin Guzman said he had been working on a new security operation Semana Santa Segura 2010 ("Safe Easter 2010") to provide greater security for everybody. The plan involves putting 119 thousand officers on the streets as well as office staff.
He said he spoke with JCE president Julio Csar Castaos Guzmn, asking him to identify measures that would avoid political issues linked to alcohol which could affect public order in Holy Week.
He said they hoped that people would respect the religious meaning of this holiday and avoid further trauma.
Fermin Guzman spoke during a meeting held in police headquarters with his regional directors.
He warned that he is going to be more strict with access to the beaches which are closed during this period.
