Polls suggest PLD may be out in May 2012

Viewed 415 times.For those of you interested in the upcoming Presidential election, the latest polls conducted by CID –Gallup Latinoamerica provide some interesting statistics and suggest that the current ruling party, the PLD, could be beaten by the opposing PRD, in the May 2012 elections.

1206 adults were questioned between 6-13 January regarding whom they would vote for. 55% said Hipolito Mejia running for the PRD party, and only 43% said Danilo Medina from the incumbent PLD party.
Overall, 50% of voters backed the PRD, while 42% said the PLD.
Potential voters were also asked who was their favorite politician. More people opted for the current First Lady Margarita Cedeno (PLD) with 67%, followed by Hipolito Mejia (PRD) with 56% and Danilo Medina (PLD) with 52%. Only 40% of people went for the current President of the Republic, Leonel Fernandez (PLD).
Margarita Cedeno is running along with Danilo Medina, while Hipolito Mejia is running with businessman Luis Abinader who got a popularity rating of 48%, also higher than the current president.
The poll showed that supporters of the opposition candidate (Mejia) are proportionally more likely to be aged under 30, those who believe that their homes today are worse off economically than last year, and those undergoing secondary education.
The pollsters say that this poll is representative of the country’s population with a 95% accuracy (margin of error equal to ± 2.8 points).
