Power cuts on North Coast get worse, Edenorte deny responsibility

The president of the Retailers Association of towns in the western area of Puerto Plata District, Juan Bautista Bisono, said production has been stalled by lack of electricity.
He said the latest power cuts last up to 16 hours a day, which is leading to owners of many grocery stores suffering losses from damaged stock in freezers and refrigerators.
Daily reports are being received about the power outages from towns all along the north Coast from Villa Isabela, Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete.
The director of public relations for EDENORTE, John Musa, said the power outage is due to the Costambar power generating company, San Felipe, putting its generator out of service.
This plant contributes 185 megawatts to the national grid, which represents about 83% of demand for electric power on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic.
Musa denied that EDENORTE was responsible for the wave of blackouts suffered in recent days by the population of Puerto Plata district, saying, "Our company does not produce energy, but rather we purchase it from the generators and then sell it to users in the North Coast.
