Price of chicken goes up - transport to blame
posted on: Feb 11 2010 10:39 by Royston. Viewed 701 times. The 20% increase in transportation costs imposed by members of the National Federation of Dominican Transport (Fenatrado) was the fundamental reason that farmers increased the cost of chicken by RD$300 last week.

This was confirmed by the president of the Chicken Producers Association (Asopollon), Jose Lopez, who also announced increases next week of RD$4 a pound in farm gate prices of chicken. This will take the price to RD$25.50 after starting the month at RD$18 per pound.
Lopez said that chicken farmers continued to lose RD$12 per pound despite recent price rises due to the rise in the value of the dollar and because of this it was necessary to find ways to offset production costs.
Adding to the debate, Manuel Seat, president of the Association of Egg Producers (Asohuevo) defended rises in egg prices, saying they had only risen 20 centavos per egg, making the farmers price RD$3.10.
Asohuevo and Asopollon both agreed that the increase in demand for eggs and chickens for the Haitian market was another major reason for the price rises due to shortage of supply.
The Dominican National Transport Federation (Fenatrado), claimed in a press conference on Tuesday that people were misrepresenting the facts about rises in freight and fuel costs. This was in answer to claims that transport cost increases were unjustified due to the reduction in diesel costs over the past 2 months.
