Deputy Minister of Tourism, Csar Jos de los Santos, has announced an assistance program for the so-called "street children" of  Sosua. The project will be run by Lieutenant Colonel Jhonny Vsquez of the Children and Adolescents section of POLITUR, the tourist police.

During a press conference at the Tourism offices in Puerto Plata, also attended by the head of the North Coast POLITUR Col. Pea Pea and Carolina Garca, it was explained that the program will include a home which will provide shelter for these children, who will receive food, education and religious training. According to the statement by Deputy De los Santos the program is part of an initiative by President Leonel Fernandez who is concerned about anything which may affect the proper development of tourism in Sosua. He said that President Fernandez instructed the Minister of Tourism, Mr. Francisco Javier Garcia and POLITUR National Director, General Henrys Gmez Bueno, to instigate this action.

Lt. Col. Johnny Vasquez said POLITUR had been running a similar program since 2008 in Boca Chica and it had been extended to cover areas of great importance such as Sosua and Puerto Plata. He added that it is a way to help these children and while ensuring an appropriate environment for visitors to these destinations.

Thank goodness that something is being done.. these boys are causing a serious problem in Sosua. Of course they need to be taken care of - where are their parents/family ?

When is the program starting ? if these kids are not taken care of they will for sure become Sosua's future criminals if they are not already.
