President Leonel Fernandez has declared his intention to create a simplified single portal for potential foreign investors to approach the government with their proposals.

This was announced on Tuesday by the director of the Dominican Center for Import and Investment  (CEI- RD), Eddy Martinez, after a meeting with the Executive and Investment Committee at the National Palace, which reviewed proposals by five international companies that would create thousands of jobs, with an investment of US$700 million .

He explained they projects currently being put forward included a large scale agriculture development focusing  on rice production for export and a proposal from Teleformance, one the biggest call center businesses in the world, to bring a thousand jobs to the Dominican Republic in the very near future. The company president visited the country three weeks ago and reports have suggested a possible future investment creating 5,000 jobs.

Martinez said there were another two telecommunications companies that would invest US$200 million this year, rising to as much as US$400 million each next year.
He said that the fifth project discussed in the meeting, was a furniture manufacturer in the United States, who wanted to move it's manufacturing operation from China to the Dominican Republic, producing 90,000 units a year for the US and European markets..

Martinez went on to say that the President's wish was for all the various government departments and municipal authorities be channeled through a single entity to make the process much simpler for foreign companies to bring investment to the country.
