Proposals to streamline foreign investment procedures

This was announced on Tuesday by the director of the Dominican Center for Import and Investment (CEI- RD
), Eddy Martinez, after a meeting with the Executive and Investment Committee at the National Palace, which reviewed proposals by five international companies that would create thousands of jobs, with an investment of US$700 million .
He explained they projects currently being put forward included a large scale agriculture development focusing on rice production for export and a proposal from Teleformance, one the biggest call center businesses in the world, to bring a thousand jobs to the Dominican Republic in the very near future. The company president visited the country three weeks ago and reports have suggested a possible future investment creating 5,000 jobs.
Martinez said there were another two telecommunications companies that would invest US$200 million this year, rising to as much as US$400 million each next year.
He said that the fifth project discussed in the meeting, was a furniture manufacturer in the United States, who wanted to move it's manufacturing operation from China to the Dominican Republic, producing 90,000 units a year for the US and European markets..
Martinez went on to say that the President's wish was for all the various government departments and municipal authorities be channeled through a single entity to make the process much simpler for foreign companies to bring investment to the country.
